Types of wolf hunting
Wolf hunting is a common activity in Russia, and it is a serious business for true men. The wolf hunting season lasts from January until March. By the end of summer young wolves begin to live an independent life, and getting close to a lair is no longer an easy task. In summer and autumn, wolves are hunted by stalking, and the effectiveness of hunting from a hide depends on how properly you have mapped wolf routes.
Flagging is the most common and effective way of wolf hunting. However, this method requires serious preparation (buying materials for flags, outfits, weapons, etc.) To do it well, it is very important to properly organize a team and assign functions to each hunter. When hunting, it is better to communicate through gestures instead of conversation. Hunters must learn to understand each other, so they will not make noise and wolves will not run away. Winter is a hungry season for wolves, and it makes them easy targets. Therefore, once you spot a wolf’s day-resting site and begin to use baits, you have reasons to believe that the predator will choose this place.
If a hunting team is big enough, you can block the animal from two sides. Once gunmen take up their positions, the rest of the team should begin to press from the opposite side. It is advisable to use buckshot. Because wolves are pretty die-hard, the distance between a gunman and an animal should not exceed 50 m. Our skilled trainers know the ins and outs of the reserve and have the right experience, so they will help you organize a top-level hunt and get your trophy.
In late February/early March you can effectively bait wolves with a piglet. Once wolves hear the squealing, they walk out and get a direct shot instead of beef. As hungry animals approach, hunters should stop the sledge, which they use, and shoot them. This hunting method is very exciting and completely safe because predators are afraid of armed men.
Hunting wolves from blinds yields excellent results, and is most effective in full moon. In most cases, blinds are placed 30 m away from the bait. A blind is a hollow in the ground, in which one or two hunters can fit. As you wait for the predator, make sure there is nothing to disguise you and “stick to your guns”. Once the wolf starts eating, pull the trigger. The shot will be more effective if you hit the animal in the shoulder-blade.
Wolf stalking is commonly carried out in winter and it should begin at dawn. Once you find the supposed wolf route, continue to trace the animal. If you spot an animal, which is kilometers away from you, in binoculars, you have an opportunity to choose the best way of approaching it. Finding a sleeping wolf is a great luck, but even in this case you must keep an eye on it. Once you see it move and raise its head, hide immediately. The ideal distance between you and the animal is 30-40 meters. This way of hunting is quite exciting, and it takes not only experience, but also restraint and self-control.
Hunting waterfowl in spring will be prohibited in Russia. The ban will come into force in 2015.
