Although hare can be found in many regions of our country, its population is irregular. Nevertheless, hare hunting has extended pretty much in the Tver Province because this region boasts a suitable habitat.
Hares can be hunted with dogs, tracked and stalked at any time of the day, and it is very exciting. This seemingly easy-to-hunt animal is very adept at doubling on traces and misleading hunters. Therefore, before you go on a hare hunt, you’d better do a little research on the animal’s tracks and footprints.
To succeed in hunting, you should be able to distinguish between traces, although weather does make a lot of difference too. It is easier to track a hare through fresh snow. If it is quite a while since the last snowfall, recognize footprints can be very tough even for experienced hunters.
Hare hunting in winter does not tolerate haste. Hesitation is no good either. If you find a happy medium, you can get a trophy right from a hare’s bed.
A hare’s track starts from its lair, from which it leads toward its feeding site. Hares continue to move a lot when feeding, and they take lots of breaks.
Before resting, a hare makes several loops to confuse pursuers. It chooses a quiet and inconspicuous place for resting, mostly in shrubs. Hares sleep with eyes open, keeping the face in the direction, from which they have come and from where they expect an attack. Hunting a hare with dog is exciting for both the hunter and his dogs. You can track a hare over ground or snow, and this sort of hunting requires a special kind of training. Hunting with dogs is more effective on a quiet and cloudy day. If you walk out at dawn, you will find fresh hare footprints easily. Once a hunter spots a hare, he sets a dog to trace it and takes up a position to shoot.
In autumn hares are mostly stalked, because it is easier to lure animals at this time. This method is great for those who dislike lengthy tracking. These hunters find it easier to attract an animal to a place where they can conveniently take it.
When preparing for stalking, it is important to focus on some tricks. First of all, do not take alcohol, onions, or garlic before hunting. If you do, the hare will smell these products, and trophy will be the last thing you can get this time. Tis is also true of smoking. To ensure a successful hunt, hunters use manure to disguise themselves. It is an easy way to mislead a hare.
Hunting waterfowl in spring will be prohibited in Russia. The ban will come into force in 2015.
